In the beginning..... there was "Pop Idol" in the U.K., hosted by Ant & Dec. It took the UK by storm in 2001 and the finale, between Gareth Gates and Will Young, was watched by one of the largest TV audiences ever known in the United Kingdom. The winner, Will Young, went on to have major success around the world.
"Pop Idol' was created by Simon Fuller and amongst the judges on the UK show was one Simon Cowell. The format was exported to many other countries, notably the USA where the show was called "American Idol". While there has only ever been one more season of 'Pop Idol" in the UK, 'American Idol' will be launching its 8th season early in 2009.
